The W32.BEAGLE.M virus is making the rounds here in Penn National.  Somebody without adequate virus protection is infected and is sending infected e-mail.  The name of the sender inn the e-mail message may not be the person spreading the virus.  Any name in the infected computer's address book could have been selected as the sender.  Please, everybody update your virus protection.

Make sure your virus software is up to date.

VIRUS CHECKING SOFTWARE

Is your Virus checking software up to date? There are new viruses developed every day. You should update the software often. Some experts recommend you should visit the web site of your vendor at least every week. Some of the newer software will check for updates automatically every time you log onto the internet. I  heartily recommend this. It removes the burden of having to remember to check for updates.

Protect your system Physically. The message below is from a resident of Penn National. Even though the power, telephone, etc lines are underground, this is no guarantee that lightning and other "events" will not damage your system. Use of an UPS and a device that protects your phone line is highly recommended. One can buy an UPS at Staples for about $50 and up. Little enough to protect a system that costs in the thousands of $$.

Hal

Hey Hal.  A word to the wise based on my experience with lightning last night.  If you don’t have your modem PHONE line protected with a surge protector, do it NOW.  We had a nearby—like about 2000 feet or so—lightning event that coupled with my phone line and blew out my phone line surge protector.  It was a bit scary with a giant flash in my office in front of my intercom/FAX line manager followed almost immediately by a deafening crash.  Fortunately, I had the phone line protected, otherwise I would be replacing my modem and possibly my motherboard today instead of a surge protector.  Just thought I’d pass this on for what it’s worth.  Like “they” say, a word to the wise is sufficient.

We have been getting hit by a number of viruses lately! If you have not been hit, be Patient! The chances are really high that you will be.  But don't fear these things. Get educated! You CAN protect your computer by being smart.

12/20/2003 Warning to users.

Do not give credit card or other payment information to unknown or unsolicited e-mails, web sites, or phone calls.  The same caution applies to solicitations received in the mail.  See below.

I got this message yesterday.  Sent a reply to the sender - Orelia Stephane@cis.net.  I replied that we pay our bill via Sprint and what are you talking about?>  The mail was ret'd as undeliverable.  I went to earthlink's website, hit "contact us" and a box popped up to verify a website.  The response I received was that this was not a legit earthlink website.  Just thought I would pass this on in the event any of our other earthlink people received the same.  They try every which way, don't they?  This certainly looks as if it came from Earthlink.  Have a wonderful holiday!  Marge McNamee
